Alternate Page With Proper Canonical Tag: Do You Need to Fix It?

October 17, 2026 · 4 min read

"Alternate page with proper canonical tag" is a status in the Page Indexing report of Google Search Console. It means this page points to another page as the main version, and Google agreed and indexed that main version instead.

Google says there is nothing to do. In most cases that is true.

Why This Status Exists

Many sites have several URLs for the same content. A canonical tag tells Google which one to show in search. The others are listed under this status.

  • A product reachable through a collection or category path as well as its own URL.
  • Pages with tracking or filter parameters, like ?utm_source= or ?color=blue.
  • Mobile or AMP versions that point to the main page.
  • Paginated or sorted listings that point to a main listing.

When It Needs Action

Check the list for pages that should rank on their own. Action is needed when:

  • A real service, location, or product page points its canonical at a different page by mistake.
  • Every page on the site points its canonical at the homepage, a common theme or plugin bug.
  • The count jumped suddenly after a redesign, migration, or plugin change.
  • A page you are trying to rank appears here instead of in the indexed list.

How to Check Yours in 4 Steps

  • Open the issue in Search Console and scan the example URLs for any page you want in search.
  • Run that URL through URL Inspection and look at the user-declared canonical.
  • If it points to the wrong page, change the canonical tag so the page points to itself.
  • Request indexing for the corrected page and watch it move into the indexed list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an error? No. It usually means your canonical tags are doing their job.

Why is the number so high? Shops and sites with filters create many URL versions. A high count is normal if every listed URL is a true alternate.

Should I remove these URLs? No. Leave them pointing to the main version. Removing them can break links customers use.

What is the difference from Duplicate without user-selected canonical? Here, your site chose the main version. In the duplicate status, nobody chose and Google decided on its own.
