Blocked by Robots.txt: What It Means and How to Fix It
October 17, 2026 · 5 min read
"Blocked by robots.txt" in Google Search Console means a rule in your site's robots.txt file tells Google not to crawl that page.
Robots.txt is a small text file at yoursite.com/robots.txt. Search engines read it before they crawl anything else on your site.
Is It a Problem?
Only if the blocked page should be in Google. Blocking admin areas, checkout steps, and internal search results is normal.
If your homepage, service pages, or products are on the list, Google cannot read them, and they will not rank properly.
Common Causes
- A "Disallow: /" rule left over from when the site was being built, which blocks the whole site.
- A plugin or theme setting that added rules you did not know about.
- A broad rule like "Disallow: /services" that blocks more pages than intended.
- Rules that block the CSS or JavaScript files Google needs to see the page properly.
Robots.txt Does Not Hide Pages
Google says robots.txt is not a way to keep a page out of search results. A blocked page can still appear if other sites link to it, just without a description.
To keep a page out of Google, use a noindex tag and leave the page crawlable so Google can see the tag. If a page is blocked by robots.txt, Google never reads its noindex tag.
How to Fix It in 5 Steps
- Open yoursite.com/robots.txt in a browser and read every Disallow line.
- In Search Console, run an affected URL through URL Inspection to confirm robots.txt is the cause.
- Remove or narrow the rule that blocks pages you want in Google. Keep rules for admin, cart, and search pages.
- If you want a page out of search, remove the robots.txt block and add noindex instead.
- Request indexing for your most important unblocked pages, then click Validate Fix on the issue.
How Long It Takes
Google says it generally caches robots.txt for up to 24 hours, so your change can take a day to be seen. Google says validation of the fix can take up to about two weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I edit robots.txt on WordPress? Most SEO plugins, such as Yoast and Rank Math, include a robots.txt editor. Without one, the file is in your site's root folder on the server.
What does Indexed, though blocked by robots.txt mean? Google indexed the URL from links elsewhere without reading the page. If you want it in search, unblock it. If not, unblock it and add noindex.
Can I break my site's SEO with robots.txt? Yes. A single "Disallow: /" line can stop Google crawling every page, so check the file after any redesign or launch.
Do I need a robots.txt file at all? No. Without one, Google crawls everything it can find. Most sites use one only to keep crawlers out of admin and duplicate areas.
