Core Web Vitals Assessment Failed: How to Fix It

October 17, 2026 · 6 min read

"Core Web Vitals Assessment: Failed" appears in Google PageSpeed Insights when real visitors to your site had a slow or jumpy experience on at least one of three measures.

It is based on real visits from Chrome users over the past 28 days, not on a one-off test. That is why it can fail even when the Performance score looks fine.

The 3 Metrics and Their Pass Marks

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how fast the biggest thing on screen appears. Good is 2.5 seconds or less.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how fast the page reacts to a tap or click. Good is 200 milliseconds or less.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much the page jumps around while loading. Good is 0.1 or less.

Google uses the 75th percentile, so 75% of visits need to hit the good mark. Failing any one metric fails the whole assessment.

How to Fix Slow LCP

  • Resize and compress the main image at the top of the page, and use a modern format like WebP.
  • Do not lazy load the main image. It should load first.
  • Use page caching and a faster host if the server is slow to respond.
  • Cut sliders and large videos from the top of the page.

How to Fix Slow INP

  • Remove plugins, apps, and scripts you no longer use.
  • Delay chat widgets, popups, and tracking scripts until after the page loads.
  • Replace heavy page builder sections with simpler blocks where you can.

How to Fix High CLS

  • Give every image and video a set width and height so space is saved for it.
  • Reserve space for cookie banners, ads, and announcement bars instead of pushing the page down.
  • Load web fonts so text does not jump when the font arrives.

How Long It Takes to Pass

Because the data covers 28 days of real visits, a fix takes weeks to show fully. In the Search Console Core Web Vitals report, click Start Tracking after your fix; Google monitors it for 28 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does failing hurt my Google rankings? Google uses page experience as one signal among many. It rarely beats having the most relevant page, but slow pages lose visitors before they ever call.

Why does it say No Data? Pages without enough Chrome visitors have no field data. Google may show results for your whole site instead.

My Performance score is 90. Why did I fail? The score is a lab test on one simulated device. The assessment uses real visitors on real phones and connections.

Which metric should I fix first? Whichever one is failing. If several fail, start with LCP, since the main image and server speed are usually the quickest wins.
