Crawled Currently Not Indexed: How to Fix It
October 17, 2026 · 6 min read
"Crawled - currently not indexed" is a status in the Page Indexing report of Google Search Console. It means Google visited the page, read it, and chose not to add it to its index.
A page that is not indexed cannot appear in Google search at all, for any keyword.
What Google Says About It
Google says the page may or may not be indexed in the future, and that there is no need to resubmit the URL for crawling.
In plain terms: requesting indexing again and again does not help. Google already saw the page. Something about the page has to change for the answer to change.
Is It a Problem?
It depends on which pages are listed.
- Tag pages, search result pages, thin archive pages, and old test pages: usually fine to leave out.
- Service pages, location pages, products, and your best articles: a real problem, because those pages bring in customers.
Common Causes
- The page is new and Google has not decided yet.
- The content is thin: a few lines of text, or the same text found on other pages.
- The page is very close to another page on the site, so Google sees little value in both.
- Few or no internal links point to it, so it looks unimportant.
- The site publishes many low value pages, which lowers how much Google wants to index from it.
How to Fix It in 5 Steps
- Export the list from Search Console and mark which URLs actually matter to your business.
- For each page that matters, add real substance: specific details, answers to the questions customers ask, photos, prices or process, anything another page does not have.
- Merge near-identical pages into one stronger page and redirect the old URLs to it.
- Link to the page from your homepage, menu, or strongest pages, using words that describe it.
- Make sure it is in your XML sitemap, then request indexing once, after the real changes are live.
For pages that do not matter, either improve them or add a noindex tag so Google spends its time on the pages that do.
How Long It Takes
There is no fixed timeline. After real improvements, many pages get picked up on Google's next visits. If you fixed a batch, click Validate Fix in the report; Google says validation can take up to about two weeks, sometimes longer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a penalty? No. It is a quality and priority decision, not a manual action against your site.
What is the difference from Discovered - currently not indexed? Discovered means Google knows the URL but has not visited it yet. Crawled means it visited and still said no.
Will requesting indexing fix it? Not on its own. Request indexing after you change the page, not instead of changing it.
Can a small site have this problem? Yes. Small sites with template location pages or very short service pages see it often.
