llms.txt Generator: How to Create an llms.txt File for Your Site

llms.txt is a plain text file that gives AI tools a short, clean summary of your site and links to your most useful pages.

It was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024. The file sits at the root of your site, at yoursite.com/llms.txt.

What Goes in the File

The file is written in Markdown, in this order:

• A heading with your business or site name. This is the only required part.
• A one or two line summary of what you do, written as a quote.
• Optional short notes, such as your service area.
• Sections of links to your key pages, each with a short note on what the page covers.
• An optional section called Optional for secondary pages an AI can skip.

3 Ways to Generate One

• WordPress with Yoast SEO: switch on the llms.txt feature in Site Features. Yoast says it is free on every plan, builds the file from your key content, and refreshes it automatically.
• Any site: write it by hand in a text editor using the format above, then upload it to your site's root folder.
• Online generators: several free tools crawl your site and draft a file. Always edit the result, because they pick pages blindly.

What It Does and Does Not Do

Be clear about this before you spend time on it.

• Google says Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, does not use llms.txt. It will not help or hurt your Google rankings.
• Google also says it is fine to keep one for other services that may use it.
• Some AI tools and coding assistants read it when they visit a site, which is where it can help.

The things that actually get you into AI answers are the same as good SEO: clear pages that answer real questions, a consistent business identity, and trust from other sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is llms.txt a ranking signal? Not for Google, which says it ignores the file.

Does it replace my sitemap? No. A sitemap lists every page for search engines. llms.txt is a short, hand-picked summary.

Can it hurt my site? No. At worst it is ignored.

How often should I update it? Whenever your main services or key pages change. Plugins like Yoast update it automatically.
