Squarespace to WordPress: How to Move Your Site Step by Step
October 17, 2026 · 6 min read
Squarespace has a built-in export made for WordPress. It saves your content as an .xml file that WordPress can import.
It does not move everything, so plan for the gaps before you start.
What the Export Includes
- Regular layout pages and gallery pages.
- One blog, with its posts and comments. If you have several blogs, you pick one.
- Text and image blocks.
What It Leaves Behind
- Store pages and products.
- Video and audio blocks.
- Your design, style settings, and custom CSS.
- Album, cover, index, calendar, and portfolio pages.
- Drafts and any extra blogs.
Squarespace also warns that images can break with the self-hosted WordPress importer, so check every page after import.
How to Move in 7 Steps
- Set up WordPress hosting and install WordPress with a theme close to your current look.
- List every Squarespace URL, from your sitemap at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml.
- In Squarespace, go to Settings and export your site as the WordPress file.
- In WordPress, use Tools, Import, WordPress, and upload the file.
- Rebuild anything the export left out, and re-upload images that did not come across.
- Set up 301 redirects from every old URL to its new one. Squarespace blog URLs like /blog/post-name often change.
- Move your domain or point its DNS to the new host, then submit the new sitemap in Search Console.
Keep Your Rankings
- Keep URLs the same where you can.
- Redirect every old URL that changes. Missing redirects are the main cause of lost traffic after a move.
- Copy over page titles and meta descriptions.
- Watch the Page Indexing report in Search Console for a few weeks after launch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move my products? Not through the export. Export products as a CSV from Squarespace and import them into WooCommerce.
Can I keep my domain? Yes. You can transfer it or just point it to the new host.
Will my design come across? No. You rebuild the look with a WordPress theme.
Why move at all? WordPress gives you full control of SEO settings, plugins, speed, and hosting, which matters as your site grows.
